Online therapy for women and the seasons of motherhood
Becoming and being a parent is beautiful, and it’s anything but easy.
There is nothing else quite like the transformation to becoming a mom
Before we even become parents we hear the story that motherhood is supposed to be natural, intuitive and fulfilling. That creating the family we’ve dreamt of will happen within a desired timeline and bring fulfillment and endless joy.
Although there can be truth in this, many parents, and individuals hoping to become parents, are shocked when the reality they are faced with does not line up with what they had expected this season of life to look like. When feelings of rage, grief, and anxiety come up, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere, it can feel isolating and overwhelming.
The path to parenthood and growing a family can be massively complicated by infertility, loss, birth trauma and mental health challenges. The desire to “get it right”, and upsetting intrusive thoughts can leave parents and parents-to-be with a sense of confusion, that they are “messing up”, or despair that things will feel this way forever.
If this season of life has been challenging, you are not alone
At least 1/5 moms experience a PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders)
Anxiety or depression during pregnancy or postpartum, birth trauma, questioning whether you “should” feel this way, worrying about if what baby is doing is “normal”, these can all be incredibly overwhelming and isolating experiences. If you are feeling uncertain, low, or “not yourself”, know that you do not need to struggle through this on your own.
I’m Britni.
I believe you deserve to be cared for and supported in every stage of pregnancy, postpartum and parenting.
I come to this work as a psychotherapist, mental health counsellor, social worker, and most importantly, a mom.
The transition to becoming a mother is one of the most transformative experiences a woman will go through. And despite the joy and excitement that comes with growing a family, so many circumstances can leave us wondering, “is it supposed to feel this hard?” , “can I do this?”.
Although I’ve been a practicing social worker for many years, my passion for working in this space grew out of my own experiences with infertility, postpartum challenges, and scary-to-talk-about anxiety and intrusive thoughts. I know first-hand the highs and lows that can come in this chapter of life; and how having the right supports can make all the difference. If this season of life has felt heavy, it does not need to stay this way and know that you are so worthy of support and care.
"The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new." – Rajneesh
