Hi, I’m Britni

I’m an Alberta-based mental health therapist who specializes in perinatal care. I offer support to individuals who are trying to conceive, pregnant, postpartum and those who are parenting children.

Whether you have a babe in your arms, your womb, your heart, or you are holding onto hope for your baby—if this chapter of life has felt heavy, we can work together to find your way to calm, confidence, healing, and joy!

"Motherhood is a beautiful, messy, and imperfect journey. It’s okay to embrace the mess." – Karen Kleiman

Therapy with me is…

Warm, non-judgemental, caring, and sprinkled with the occasional 4-letter word. As a mom, I understand the ups and downs of parenting and the pressure that can weigh on your mind. I want therapy to be a place you can exhale, drop your shoulders, and feel safe to discuss the concerns and hard moments that are staying with you. Although therapy can be an opportunity to talk about challenging and serious topics, we can also make space for fun and laughter.

My general approach to therapy is highly collaborative and rests in the belief that being witnessed, heard and validated are essential elements to our healing. As the client, you are always in the lead of the pace and focus of the work we do together. Also know that we don’t need to shy away from talking about the hard and scary moments that come in life and with parenthood, without shame or judgement. Providing the space for you to find the glimmers of hope and increasing capacity to manage the challenges, knowing that there is nothing you can’t overcome.

While my practice is primarily focused on the perinatal population, I do work with individuals with a range of presenting concerns, if you are curious about working together, you are welcome to connect with me to see if we would be a good fit.

Although my training and clinical skills provide me the basis from which I engage in this work, I am first and foremost a human, and see the same inherent value and worth in every person I am able to work with. I am always truly honored and humbled by those who have chosen to work with me and see it as a privilege that I get to hold space and offer hope throughout someone’s healing journey.

I am trained in several models of psychotherapy and treatment approaches. I primarily draw from attachment based and relational approaches, while utilizing narrative therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), parts work (IFS informed), emotion focused therapy (EFT) and mindfulness strategies. All my work is based on the principles of trauma-informed care and I am trained in EMDR for trauma.  We will work together to create a treatment plan that is meaningful, cultivates hope, and emphasizes your existing strengths and abilities.

How I come to this work…

As a social worker and with over 15 years of experience working with children and families, often in complex circumstances, I thought I was well equipped to enter into motherhood.

Instead, I experienced an unexpected infertility journey and found myself ill prepared to face the challenges that would arise within my relationships, life trajectory, and ultimatley my relationship with myself and my body while trying to conceive. Once I became pregnant, I expected to be overcome with a sense of joy and relief, and this was quickly overshadowed by intense anxiety.

In the midst of postpartum, I was left with a sense of confusion, frustration and failure. I desperately wanted to “get it right”, I had wanted this so badly; surely parenting wasn’t meant to feel this difficult?

After some time (too long), I realized I needed help, I went to therapy, started to feel better, and quickly realized I had been experiencing postpartum anxiety and depression. I was able to process my transition into motherhood, find myself within this role, and discover joy and healing in the journey.

I know both personally and professionally how important and needed support is for folks navigating any stage of becoming parents, postpartum or parenting. It has been an honour to walk alongside so many individuals in this tender stage of life .
