The transition into parenthood can be deeply meaningful—and deeply challenging.

Mother and baby postpartum virtual counseling Britni Chambers in Medicine Hat

Before becoming parents, many of us absorb messages about what parenthood is supposed to feel like—that it will come naturally, follow a predictable timeline, and bring constant fulfillment and joy. These expectations can shape how parents and caregivers view themselves long before this season of life begins.

While there can be moments of truth in these narratives, many parents and individuals hoping to become parents are surprised when reality doesn’t align with what they imagined. When emotions such as anxiety, grief, anger, or overwhelm surface—sometimes unexpectedly—it can feel isolating and difficult to manage on your own.

The journey into parenthood and growing a family can be complicated by infertility, loss, birth-related stress or trauma, and mental health challenges. The pressure to “get it right,” along with intrusive or distressing thoughts, can leave parents and caregivers feeling confused, inadequate, or afraid that things will always feel this way. Support during this season can help bring clarity, relief, and a sense of steadiness.

If this season of life has been challenging, you are not alone.

Many parents and caregivers experience emotional and mental health challenges at some point along their parenting journey. Anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, birth-related stress or trauma, and constant worry about whether you’re “doing it right” are more common than many people realize.

Parenting can bring deep meaning alongside intense pressure, uncertainty, and exhaustion. If you’re feeling anxious, disconnected, emotionally low, or not quite like yourself, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to navigate this season without support. Therapy offers a space to process these experiences, strengthen coping skills, and feel more grounded and supported as a parent or caregiver.

“There is no way to be a perfect parent, but a million ways to be a good one.”
